Weight Loss Motivation

As I sit here writing I am not feeling particularly motivated today. Life can be a bloody challenge some days and no matter how hard we wish we could hide away until things become better, easier; that isn’t how it works.

Have you ever that fantasy where you go to sleep one night overweight, miserable and mentally exhausted then you wake up in the morning, look down at yourself and you are now SKINNY!?!?!  But not only that your whole world has changed. You suddenly are the happiest women in the world. You have an amazing wardrobe full of ‘skinny’ clothes, you actually LOVE yourself because you are now the perfect body size and everyone thinks you are the most beautiful woman in the world.

What a dream!

I could not even hazard a guess how many times I had that fantasy. Probably multiple times a day for over 20 years. Which works out to be AT LEAST 23, 000 fantasies swirling around my head on a daily basis. But this was not enough for my weight loss motivation.

For those 20 + years I continued to wallow in my own self-hatred. The only thoughts I knew were negative, self-deprecating and disapproving. Who was I to like who I was? Who was I to feel good about myself? Who was I to believe I could be happy?

I wanted so badly to lose the weight and BE HAPPY. But I truly had no one clue how to do that. I had no one to turn to for advice and the deep-seated belief that I was not worth the effort kept me from even trying. Why bother?

Well, I will tell you “WHY BOTHER?”!!!!

You are worth the effort.

You are worth the belief in yourself.

So, how do you find the motivation to keep going when those beliefs get in the way and stop you from achieving your weight loss goals?

Here are my top 5 power moves to keep the weight loss motivation alive because you deserve every bit of health, happiness and self-love in the universe.

1. Discover your ‘WHY’.

Why are you losing weight? Is it because you need to improve your health? So you want to have the energy to get throughout the day without wanting a nap in the afternoon? Do you have young children you want to play with? Go for bike rides and walks and enjoy being together as a family in the beautiful outdoors?  Whatever your WHY use this as motivation every day to keep going. When you are faced with a challenge such as a birthday cake at work or you desperately want to stop at the drive-through on your way home because you feel like shit… remember your WHY. Your kids, your health, yourself, your family. Everyone in your life deserves the most amazing version of you. Especially YOU!

2. Forgiveness.

The past comes back to haunt us time and time again. We relive old moments and play them out like they are happening right now. But how motivating is doing this? Not very motivating at all. In fact, it prevents us from moving forward and evolving. Our past is great at shaping who we are but it doesn’t have to define us. WE get to decide what defines us. WE have the power inside us to determine the kind of person we are going to be. What led you to put on weight in the first place? Did you have a shitty childhood where your parents didn’t show you any love? Was there a traumatic experience you haven’t been able to deal with? Did someone say something truly awful to you once and it has stuck with you ever since? Every single one of us has had something bad happen in our life. We all carry around a heavy weight. But you don’t have to. Whatever has happened throughout your life forgiveness is there to lighten the load and helping you to heal those parts of you which have been damaged. 3. Gratitude.

Gratitude is another powerful tool to help you with your weight loss motivation. Too often we focus on what we don’t have instead of what we do have. Does this sound like you? I am the first to admit I was always thinking about those things I didn’t have. I didn’t have the right clothes with the right sizing label. I didn’t have a fancy house. I didn’t have someone to love me. I didn’t have any money. I didn’t have the right life. I just didn’t have ANYTHING! Gosh, what a whinger. It has only been in the last 12 months where I have truly shown gratitude for what I do have. I have my health. I have a beautiful family. I have a lovely home. I have a great life. I am so grateful for all that has come into my life. This way of thinking has the most amazing mindset shift. Focusing on all of the wonderful things you DO have gives a new appreciation to your life and gives you permission to feel great about yourself resulting in even more motivation to lose the weight and become that person you deserve to be.

4. Find a motivation mentor.

Do you sometimes feel alone in your weight loss evolution? Would you like to have someone you can chat to when the motivation to get through the day is lost? Does your family support you wholly and completely? This can be one of the biggest motivation killers because there is no one to turn to when you are having a tough day. When you want to eat the whole packet of biscuits to make you feel a little bit better (even though you know it totally won’t). Have a look in your local area to find a support group. Or ask one of your friends if they would like to be your motivation mentor. Talk to your partner and be truly honest about why you need to lose the weight and what your motivation is. If they aren’t totally on board…do it anyway! Don’t allow someone else’s feeling, thoughts, emotions or reasons get in your way of losing the weight and evolving into who you want to be. Remember your WHY and persist. Stay determined.

5. Love trumps hate.

How much do you hate yourself right now? A little bit? A LOT??? I can still remember how much hatred I had for myself for so many years. It pulsed through my veins with such force it became a part of my identity. It was who I was. Hate. I hated myself. I hated the world. It was so consuming it infiltrated everything I did, everything I said. Now the hate has been replaced with love and respect for myself which filters out into my world. I have to admit it feels a little uncomfortable still as I get used to being this way but that will pass in time just as the feelings of hate have given way to feelings of love. I catch myself feeling great and I acknowledge the effort I put into giving myself a chance.

All of these power moves are great motivation to keep moving forward with your weight loss. They may not be directly associated with losing weight but first must come the mindset shift in order for the body to push itself into a healthy state.

If you find your negativity swallowing you up, use these tips to claw your way out. Take a deep breath in and breathe out to release that negativity. Don’t allow yourself to be consumed by such damaging thoughts because the more you support such hostility and condemnation the longer it will take to reach that amazing evolution waiting for you.

And now, by the end of this, I have found my motivation again to keep going. These 5 power moves can be easily forgotten when the negativity starts bombarding you. Keep them close at all times. Write them out and put them in your phone or your purse so you can look at them whenever you need a hit of motivation. Keep them on your desk, on your bathroom mirror… all over the house if you need to.  In sight, in mind.

Remember, you absolutely 100% deserve to feel worthy, loved, happy and healthy.
